Raising the Bar in Research-Based,
Data-Driven Police Administration

As part owner of Benchmark, the University of Chicago has played a key role by developing a series of predictive models and algorithms that identify patterns of officer conduct that lead to at-risk behavior in policing.

The University of Chicago has been instrumental in creating a revolutionary EIS based on longitudinal studies and analyses of officer conduct over time — in progressive police departments such as Charlotte-Mecklenburg, NC. This advanced analytic tool identifies those data variables that truly matter in signaling off-track behavior.

Collaborating with Experts Committed to Our Mission

Facilitated by the dedicated work of the National Police Early Intervention and Outcomes Research Consortium – led by the University of Chicago – Benchmark is honored to work with a highly regarded group of research organizations, universities and public safety PhD academicians. Our invaluable consortium:

Includes support of The Joyce Foundation to accelerate research and best practices for early intervention — and partnership with the American Institutes for Research

Draws on our extensive data repository covering virtually every aspect of police operations — as well as the world’s largest officer performance database with over 50 million data points

Focuses on leveraging data captured to drive transformative change and help inform outcomes, policies and processes

Assesses current interventions for effectiveness, behavior modification and recommended improvements

Supporting Policies Informed by Evidence

The Joyce Foundation – a key member of our research consortium – provides valuable assistance in closing the current research and knowledge gap around understanding how to most accurately identify and support law enforcement officers who are engaging in truly serious at-risk behavior. The foundation’s participation will help:

  • Provide on-going evaluation and case studies for the application of research-based EIS platforms
  • Curate and facilitate further research questions for investigation and focus
  • Drive policy and national learnings through the evaluation of a national benchmark on key early intervention data
